Electronic Surveillance

If it means keeping the bad guys in check and the majority of the people safe, do you really mind if your government tracks what you do online and keeps record of your communictions?

RE: Electronic Surveillance

In a word yes. There is a fundamental problem with improving perceived security through technology. It does not work. That is to say, the more you rely on technology to make you feel secure the less secure you will be. That is when you are not just GIVING away the information to would be exploiters of it for the hell of it.

Biometrics and id cards are the epitome of that.

I will go into it more but unless someone wants me to I shall just leave you a link instead.

http://www.no2id.net/

One last thought.. have you ever wondered why public CCTV ,paid for by the public , installed on behalf of the public, designed to protect the public, is not allowed to be seen by the public? Why are all these councils putting their CCTV systems in fortified bunker type environments. What exactly is it they are protecting themselves from?

Interesting information, TNT, thank you for the reply.

I'm curious, what are your thoughts on privacy software: encryption programs and onion routing and such? As an adovcate of privacy and liberty, do you use such programs yourself? And if you(or anyone else reading this) do, are you comfortable using it, or do you feel like making use of such software makes you seem guilty of something in others' eyes?

Reply

RE: Electronic Surveillance ~ wondering

Well my take on issues of privacy has been long established since the first inceptions of public key cryptography first his the wide world in general. I still remember (not so long ago I might hasten to add) when countries like the us tried to 'ban' advanced cryptography from being exported, treating it as if it were munitions being sent to an enemy country, or as they liked to put it, treason.

In a world where documents can be freely copied and passed around with just a click or two there is a place for privacy through cryptography that should never be denied and governments, despite their protestations, will have to accept that.

I think the best way to explain that issue to quote from the PGP faq written 13 years ago now. (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/pgp-faq/part1/)

-- CUT --
1.2. Why should I encrypt my mail? I'm not doing anything illegal!

You should encrypt your e-mail for the same reason that you don't
write all of your correspondence on the back of a post card. E-mail is
actually far less secure than the postal system. With the post office,
you at least put your letter inside an envelope to hide it from casual
snooping. Take a look at the header area of any e-mail message that
you receive and you will see that it has passed through a number of
nodes on its way to you. Every one of these nodes presents the
opportunity for snooping. Encryption in no way should imply illegal
activity. It is simply intended to keep personal thoughts personal.

-- CUT --

It is the old chestnut of "If you are no guilty, you have nothing to hide"
but I have my pride and my privacy which is MINE and I don't give a flying fig whether that makes me look guilty or not.

Of course trouble is we have been giving away our rights to freedom steadily for the last 20 years or so. To the point where the UK government no longer has to actually have any evidence of wrong-doing and can choose to hold you and demand you give them
access to your encrypted information. If you refuse or are UNABLE (ie
forgotten you password) then they can charge you under a trumped-up draconian law and lock you up for years with no appeal.

So the short answer, yes. I use encryption pretty much on daily basis and I wish more people would. I am an old dog and have been around for too long not to know how fragile and exposed the world of the Internet is. Just things like yahoo messenger, skype or MSN are fraught with vulnerabilities. You do realise it is possible to sniff all your yahoo chatter at will given the right circumstances? It is possible to intercept files, images and voice sent between people quite easily?

But why do so many of us not care then, if email is insecure, messengers insecure, voip insecure. Why are we not upset and demanding out privacy? I think most people tend to fall in to mindset of SEP, Somebody Else's Problem. But if you have ever been a victim of identity theft you will realise the more about yourself you give away the less of a person you become in this modern world.

Ok, I know it is kinda long but I hope it makes someone think about this issues at least. It is a wide and complicated subject, but it is
increasingly an urgent one as more and more of our freedoms to discuss this issue are curtailed.

RE: Electronic Surveillance ~ Laughing Girl ~ OT

What is interesting to postulate is that give that evil as a concept is supposed to be timeless and exist before man's creation, why is it it took until the formulation of the the Hindu-Arabic system we use now (which includes 0 , which was a 'new' concept at the time of the old testament) to actually associate evil mysticism with numbers.

In societies where abstract mathematics was not required, nor needed, quite often the concept of anything more than the 10 fingers on your hands became just 'many' 1, 2 ..10 , many. Does this mean that if you have no significance in the numbers you are immune to evil that is marked by numbers?

Or is it perhaps a spiritually polymodal need for humans to see patterns and significance when there is none. Just as everyone must create their gods and their prophets in their own image so to do we like to compartmentalise things like evil good and what lies between. Perhaps it is not evil or good which exists but rather our thoughts about evil or good that make it manifest for us.

Quite apart from what some of the truly horrendous things in the world that go on I firmly believe that the whole idea of evil acts on other humans would be obviated if perpetrators where made to experience the suffering they inflict. In a perfect (but very strange) world if you instantly suffered the same fate as your victim you would think twice about what acts you commit against your fellow man.

Off topic I know.. but.. just felt like rambling :)

RE: Electronic Surveillance ~ Laughing Girl ~ OT

Well, the conception of what is good and what is evil becomes much more clear if to accept that both good and evil have their primordial and real essence, and humans are executors...but executors who have their FREEWILL from the very beginning. So, they can freely choose what to execute during their lives. The more each of us acts maliciously, the more evil spreads and grows. I firmly believe that every person, being in sanity, is able to understand what is good and what is evil, and moreover, his inner voice exactly tells him where he is right and where he is wrong. If he brings sufferings to someone, he anyway knows and somewhere deeply inside his soul feels that he is wrong. But it was his CHOICE to do that. That is why people always try to justify all their wrongs but again, why? Because they feel they are not right, therefore are not happy. Human's nature wasn't created for executing evil. Partly those who brings sufferings to others are suffering too...(as an example read Dostoevsky's "Crime and punishment")...but another part of sufferings and punishments lays beyond our physical life (or reward and gratification if you were keeping to do your the best during your life).
So, it is not only our bad thoughts but our bad actions for sure feed the evil, give it a power, make it real and keep things in the world such as we have.
As for numbers...any of them means nothing in itself, they are just a numbers. Much more important WHAT people are doing to make them significant, so ACTIONS is what makes not only numbers but any other things "clean" or "dirty"..
Well, I was trying to answer on your question, The NakedTruth :) Seems I went too far...lol. Ah, and forgot to say...it is just my point of view, so I am not insisting everyone should think like me.

Just heard a report of a woman in Saudi Arabia who is going to be beheaded because he supposedly practices witchcraft.... The evidence against her was a white robe in her closet and a couple of men who claim that she cast a spell on them and made them impotent.
Do you think court sytem in Saudi Arabia realizes that it's the instrument of evil?

How about to prevent the "bad guys" from winning, they look up your ass, open your mail, investigate your health history, eavesdrop on your phone calls, open your mail, monitor your banking activity, confiscate your laptop every time you cross the border, check your voting record, steal elections, lie about civilian casualties during wartime, steal taxpayers money to conduct illegal wars, assassinate "dissident" activists, torture "terrorists" to obtain information, create weapons that will activate from outer space, ...is this OK, if we protect "ourselves" from the terrorists?

Reply

RE: Electronic Surveillance

Good question...but everything is not so easy like we used to be told by newspapers and TV. It is only a half of a truth...moreover, sometimes it is not a truth at all. Most of the horrible things in the world (terrorism, crisises, viruses etc) are actually initiated "in vitro" for the other, much more secret aims, which average citizens never know. And then, after the horrible thing "was happened" they tell us that we need IDs, biometrics, fingerprints and other methods of control "to prevent" those horrible things...Otherwise, how else could they explain their arrangements to control everyone and everything, including a private life. Every law-abiding person doesn't need that actually...
It is hard to believe maybe, but even so-called "free world" essentially is not free. It only seems that you can do everything what you want. But if you try to think deeper, you will discover that noone is actually have a real freedom. You're tied by hundreds of connections with civil being and you think you couldn't survive without them. Thus, you must do everything what is prescribed by civilization. And you will follow any new laws just to survive. This is the main tool to manipulate people all around the world.
"What for" is another question, too deep and serious...and as I know is forbidden to discuss in this forum...

Reply

RE: Electronic Surveillance

Commodities and conveniences, that is so true. Not only do they enslave us, but the companies that make their profits off of the commodities and conveniences they provide us rarely care much about the damages their products ultimately cause.
Scientific information about the negative health effects of cigarrettes, for example, or the scientific studies that have shown high correlations between mobile phone use and the development of brain tumors. Such companies pay huge sums of money just to try to hide or dispute that information just for the sake of their profits. It's evil.

Lost Luve

I can hardly breath, I can not speak
My fingers tremble and my arms go weak
My throat goes dry while my heart it pounds
And dizziness spins me all around.

I want you, need you, crave you so much
I ache so much that I need your touch
I shake with desire with passion I burn
To feel your warmth is all that I yearn

Dizziness takes me with such brute force
As the blood it pumps and runs its course
Flowing in my veins pumped from my heart
I see your lips and it begins to start.

This passion, this fear, this wrong and so right
Of wanting you here and needing you tonight
Of kissing your lips and tasting your toungue
A prisoner of your touch is where I belong

Running my fingers across your lips
Stroking my hand along your hips
Tracing the curve of silk smooth skin
Feel your warmth rise as things begin

Feel my love pulse, throb as it grows
With aching so much god only knows
The desire the need to be with you now
To feel your heart next to mine somehow

Pounding in its rhythm unable to slow
Sharing our desires as only we know
Fantasy or fact, reality or not
There's no denying this thing we've got.

But what is it we feel with such emotion
Can we conceive of such a powerful notion.
This is more than lust, more than just pure desire
This frees our souls which makes us fly higher

Do you not want me.. do you not see my need..
Can you not take me can't we share the seed.
Of love and desire from now till the dawn
Together and forever this feeling as one..

We've found each other despite the miles
So our journey's complete, our fortune smiles
Never again to feel alone or blue,
Because you love me and I love you.

Happy Valentines everyone. Enjoy!

RE: Favorite Movie?

Bogie made some great movies, but I prefered African Queen.

Though my favorite movie is Amadeus.

Casablanca All the way, Just a perfect film

RE: Favorite Movie?

To Have & Have Not..has to be my fav Bogie movie, though wouldn't be my fav of all

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Wow...lot's of Bogie fans. Casablanca great movie, To Have and Have Not, Lauren Bacll was 19 years old. Bogie and Bacall fell in love while making movie. Had to be one of the best debuts by a teenage actress.

Since the 3 were made all at once, I would have to say "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Also rans : The Godfather
Braveheart
Troy
A Hard Day's Night
Gladiator
Animal House

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Agreed. The time, energy and effort that went into that trilogy was amazing. Peter Jackson joined the ranks of great directors with that contribution.

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Like your other choices too. All quality movies, Godfather is also in my Top 10. Hard Day's Night...makes me laugh out loud, what a funny, zany movie...like Bananas by Woody Allan.

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

A walk in the Clouds...a little movie, but very romantic. The scene in the vineyards with the sheets covering the grapes, and blowing in the wind...was magical and memorable.

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

The Bourne trilogy. The Kingdom, Casablanca, Match Point (Woody Allen film with Scarlet Johansson), and my all time favorite, The Committments (story about soul band in UK).

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Bourne Trilogy great. One of the few series where each movie was better than the previous one. Will check out the Commitments.

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

RE: Favorite Movie?

Well as many have more than one favourite film, then i have to say the same. It`s hard just to name just one favourite film, cos then u think of another film that was gr8 and then u think of another one etc etc. So here is a few of my favs.

Ronin - gr8 thriller with plenty of action and some cool car chases and DeNiro.
15 Minutes is also a gr8 film with DeNiro and Edward Burns.

Lord Of The Rings Trilogy - for the pure scale of the films and the get lost in the pure fantasy of it all.

There are a few comedies but none that have made me laugh the whole way through a film, but 2 that have come close are -
Fun with Dick And Jane and Barnyard.

Just for pure out right shooting it has to be Shoot `em Up and Crank.

The most moving, thought provoking and shocking film about war and its effects on people would have to be Saving Private Ryan.

Failure to Launch and The Lake House for the romantic in me.

There are loads more that i have to watch, and my views could change after watching them but i`ll stick with these for now.
As for the old black and white films, any western with John Wayne.
Humphrey Bogart in the African Queen.
Yul Brynner in the King And I.
Cary Grant in Bringing Up Baby and any other film he was in.
They don`t make films like they used to. :P

I post under many names (except my "real one") and I read the Forums regularly, and with great interest. Ty...friends!

RE: Favorite Movie?

was a good thread movie fan and you right, made a refreshing change - my fav movie, Carmen by Carlos Saura - about love and passion of an older man for a younger woman, just like life here really.

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Though I am familiar with the story of Carmen, haven't seen that film. Yes, you are right kinda like here in some ways...like Lolita?

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Lolita, more like a typical CC romance - old man, young woman. :P

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Great list. Most I have seen, the rest I will see.

DeNiro in Ronin - "...draw it again..."

some of mine that I did not see listed (I might have missed them)...

Recent - "V for Vendetta", "Borat", "The Aristocrats", "Eurotrip", "Enemy at the Gates" , "Boiler Room" ,"Office Space"...

All time: "American History X", "Trainspotting", "Dazed and Confused", "GlenGarry, GlenRoss", "T2: Judgement Day" , "Bull Durham", "Wall Street", "Bachelor Party", "Trading Places", "History of the World , Part 1", "Animal House", "Slapshot", "Caddyshack", "The Hollywood Nights", "The Pink Panther Strikes Again", "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "Blazing Saddles" God, I am only back to 1974? lol....

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Great list, eclectic and interesting. Wall St. and Glengarry similar but both very powerful. V for Vendetta I know what you mean, but the last 30 min. were disappointing. Still, interesting if not whooly factual, and visually mesmerizing.

RE: Favorite Movie?

I stand corrected, "Animal House" was mentioned. (Ivymike assumes the position of obedience and says "Thank you, Sir! May I have another?"....)

RE: Favorite Movie?

I noticed tow things about most movies listed bt CC members, BTW the selections just keep getting better. I have written down so many movies to rent...when am I gonna sleep?

Anway, as to my observations, no Sci- Fi movies except Star Wars, and no children's movies unless you count Tolkien & Spielberg in both categories.

Soo.. let me add a couple, Wizard of Oz (1939 same year as Gone with The Wind, if you look it up, one of the greatest years in film history) and 2001 A Space Odyssey. Someone mentioned Martin Scorsese (whom I had the pleasure to meet) as the greatest director...Stanley Kubrick also a great filmmaker...mmm...perhaps I should start another thread, soon? Suggestions welcome...or just start your own!

RE: Favorite Movie?

Im the "Mulholland Drive" guy !! Thanks for starting a thread on such an interesting subject. It's been a pleasure to read all the replies. I'm not sure there would be enough interest, but how about a thread on film noir ? All the great b & w movies and stars from the 1940s & 50s

Cheers and a big hello to all movie fans wherever you are.

Horror movies? - Near Dark my fav - quite sexy too in the cinema but doesn't work so well on the small screen

Reply

RE: Favorite Movie?

Loved Close Encounters...mostly. I just loved the intensity of Richard Dreyfuss as he tries to figure out what's going on. The scene where he destroys his kitchen to build the model of the plateau, fantastic!

Find interesting way to pose the question?

But to answer your question, 1947 Kiss of Death with Richard Widmark. Throwing a woman in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs (and laughing), had to be one of the "darkest" moments in American film history.
