Let\'s start new fun thread? Fav movie of all time, and why?
I\'ll start. Mine is Maltese Falcon old Black-n- White from the 1940's...starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and the Gutman...Mr. Sydney Greenstreet. Why? Perfect dialog, flawless acting, and timeless motives,,,greed, sex, revenge!

RE: Favorite Movie?
congrats...but you're way too old to be here...make sure you take your heart medicine when necessary ;)
RE: Favorite Movie?
If you are referring to me...I'm 52 years old. I lift weights, practice martial arts, train with firearms, and have personal trainer... in 2007 rode my bike 3,000 miles +...you? :-)
RE: Favorite Movie?
yes, and thx for your understanding and no offense intended :) sure it was great to work along side such talents.
RE: Favorite Movie?
I enjoyed 300. Have you seen Spartacus with Kirk Douglas, or Ben-Hur with Charlton Heston? Oldies...but goodies.
RE: Favorite Movie?
Bogie made some great movies, but I prefered African Queen.
Though my favorite movie is Amadeus.
Though my favorite movie is Amadeus.
RE: Favorite Movie?
To Have & Have Not..has to be my fav Bogie movie, though wouldn't be my fav of all
RE: Favorite Movie?
Wow...lot's of Bogie fans. Casablanca great movie, To Have and Have Not, Lauren Bacll was 19 years old. Bogie and Bacall fell in love while making movie. Had to be one of the best debuts by a teenage actress.
RE: Favorite Movie?
Ahhh..yes! Mr. Allnut. Bogie said he hated the heat and flies, but wonderful movie resulted!
RE: Favorite Movie?
Since the 3 were made all at once, I would have to say "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
Also rans : The Godfather
Braveheart
Troy
A Hard Day's Night
Gladiator
Animal House

Troy
A Hard Day's Night
Gladiator
Animal House
RE: Favorite Movie?
Agreed. The time, energy and effort that went into that trilogy was amazing. Peter Jackson joined the ranks of great directors with that contribution.
RE: Favorite Movie?
Like your other choices too. All quality movies, Godfather is also in my Top 10. Hard Day's Night...makes me laugh out loud, what a funny, zany movie...like Bananas by Woody Allan.
RE: Favorite Movie?
A walk in the Clouds...a little movie, but very romantic. The scene in the vineyards with the sheets covering the grapes, and blowing in the wind...was magical and memorable.
RE: Favorite Movie?
The Bourne trilogy. The Kingdom, Casablanca, Match Point (Woody Allen film with Scarlet Johansson), and my all time favorite, The Committments (story about soul band in UK).
RE: Favorite Movie?
Bourne Trilogy great. One of the few series where each movie was better than the previous one. Will check out the Commitments.
Movie fan
My favourite is Mulholland Drive, but I agree with you about The Maltese Falcon. A perfect film in every aspect.

RE: Favorite Movie?
I forgot about "A Few Good Men". I can't stand that arrogant Cruise guy, but loved Jack's performance.
RE: Favorite Movie?
How about Jack Nicholson in Chinatown, mouthing off to Roman Polanski who has a switchblade inside his nostril?
RE: Favorite Movie?
chinatown a very under appreciated movie when it first came out. saw it becuase the movie i went to see at the time was sold out. theater was empty, but it was a VERY entertaining movie
RE: Favorite Movie?
Well as many have more than one favourite film, then i have to say the same. It`s hard just to name just one favourite film, cos then u think of another film that was gr8 and then u think of another one etc etc. So here is a few of my favs.
Ronin - gr8 thriller with plenty of action and some cool car chases and DeNiro.
15 Minutes is also a gr8 film with DeNiro and Edward Burns.
Lord Of The Rings Trilogy - for the pure scale of the films and the get lost in the pure fantasy of it all.
There are a few comedies but none that have made me laugh the whole way through a film, but 2 that have come close are -
Fun with Dick And Jane and Barnyard.
Just for pure out right shooting it has to be Shoot `em Up and Crank.
The most moving, thought provoking and shocking film about war and its effects on people would have to be Saving Private Ryan.
Failure to Launch and The Lake House for the romantic in me.
There are loads more that i have to watch, and my views could change after watching them but i`ll stick with these for now.
As for the old black and white films, any western with John Wayne.
Humphrey Bogart in the African Queen.
Yul Brynner in the King And I.
Cary Grant in Bringing Up Baby and any other film he was in.
They don`t make films like they used to. :P

Thanks to all for responding, and those yet to respond, Some great movies named. I just wanted to post a cool thread without hatred, or anger that we can all enjoy. There are so many thoughtful intelligent members here on CC.
I post under many names (except my "real one") and I read the Forums regularly, and with great interest. Ty...friends!

RE: Favorite Movie?
was a good thread movie fan and you right, made a refreshing change - my fav movie, Carmen by Carlos Saura - about love and passion of an older man for a younger woman, just like life here really.
RE: Favorite Movie?
Though I am familiar with the story of Carmen, haven't seen that film. Yes, you are right kinda like here in some ways...like Lolita?
RE: Favorite Movie?
Great list. Most I have seen, the rest I will see.
DeNiro in Ronin - "...draw it again..."

RE: Favorite Movie?
Great list, eclectic and interesting. Wall St. and Glengarry similar but both very powerful. V for Vendetta I know what you mean, but the last 30 min. were disappointing. Still, interesting if not whooly factual, and visually mesmerizing.
RE: Favorite Movie?
I stand corrected, "Animal House" was mentioned. (Ivymike assumes the position of obedience and says "Thank you, Sir! May I have another?"....)
RE: Favorite Movie?
I noticed tow things about most movies listed bt CC members, BTW the selections just keep getting better. I have written down so many movies to rent...when am I gonna sleep?
Anway, as to my observations, no Sci- Fi movies except Star Wars, and no children's movies unless you count Tolkien & Spielberg in both categories.
Soo.. let me add a couple, Wizard of Oz (1939 same year as Gone with The Wind, if you look it up, one of the greatest years in film history) and 2001 A Space Odyssey. Someone mentioned Martin Scorsese (whom I had the pleasure to meet) as the greatest director...Stanley Kubrick also a great filmmaker...mmm...perhaps I should start another thread, soon? Suggestions welcome...or just start your own!

Im the "Mulholland Drive" guy !! Thanks for starting a thread on such an interesting subject. It's been a pleasure to read all the replies. I'm not sure there would be enough interest, but how about a thread on film noir ? All the great b & w movies and stars from the 1940s & 50s
Cheers and a big hello to all movie fans wherever you are.

RE: Favorite Movie?
Loved Close Encounters...mostly. I just loved the intensity of Richard Dreyfuss as he tries to figure out what's going on. The scene where he destroys his kitchen to build the model of the plateau, fantastic!
RE: Favorite Movie?
Like the film noir idea...perhaps you can start a thread?
Find interesting way to pose the question?
But to answer your question, 1947 Kiss of Death with Richard Widmark. Throwing a woman in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs (and laughing), had to be one of the "darkest" moments in American film history.

clueless
ok, I've just come back to the forums after a much needed R&R break (plus I was having a good old root with a real live chick so I didn't see the point in hanging out with a bunch virtual ones) ... can someone please explain to me how this Valentine heart thing works??
RE: clueless
For every $5 you spend you get given a number between 1 and 20 and so does the host. When you have collected all 20 of your numbers you have completed your half of your heart . You can then match with ANY host who has also completed her (his) half of a heart.
I must admit that at the beginning I thought you had to search for the host that had a match to your half of your heart and so didn't participate.

someone please start posting interesting messages, nothing good to read in here anymore,, and if your thinking that I am going to write one, get over it, not my style, im just a reader not a writer, getting bored, so please people write something that sounds sexy, not about advertisement, jokes, personal things, oh you know what I mean.
RE: wanted
Good idea, so do they get paid for your entertainment or do you just sit their criticising what you can't do yourself?
Incidentally, GingerBaby is great! :-)))
Incidentally, GingerBaby is great! :-)))
RE: wanted
Oh, so you are just a reader that politely demands of others to write for your own amusement? Ha, now that\'s funny! :-)
If something is not how you like it, why don\'t you try and change it yourself, instead of asking other people to change it for you? Perhaps you could change your style and you could stop being a reader and become a writer, never know, the outcome might be just the one you want.
I do have to admit though, it has become a bit boring but that\'s probably because at the moment everyone is busy with the contest.
The other thing that might help minimising your frustration could be taking a break from reading the forums for a while and I am sure you will find something interesting to read when u return. Just a suggestion so don\'t take my head off :-P Other than that, have fun and try and enjoy everything you do :-)

well some do and some don't, some say they do but they don't, and some say they don't but they do...but with a comment like that u obviously like to get yours kicked
RE: wanted
yes i see what you mean now, tosser, I think some people although not to mention any names, due to reading the above comments, get a kick out of their own entertainment my posting their thoughts that still not interesting to read, im with you all the way on this one, please people lets read something that is worth reading, not what you think that is your own amusement, a good idea to read the newspaper more, this place is not what it use to be,,,,,,,,,,,,
Never Say To the Police
1. I can't reach my license unless you hold my beer. (OK in Texas )
2. Sorry, Officer, I didn't realize my radar detector wasn't plugged in
3. Aren't you the guy from the Village People?
4. Hey, you must've been doin' about 125 mph to keep up with me. Good job!
5. Are You Andy or Barney? (Americans will get this one)
6. I thought you had to be in relatively good physical condition to be a police officer.
7. You're not gonna check the trunk, are you?
8. I pay your salary!
9. Gee, Officer! That's terrific. The last officer only gave me a warning, too!
10 Do you know why you pulled me over? Okay, just so one of us does.
11. I was trying to keep up with traffic. Yes, I know there are no other
cars around. That's how far ahead of me they are.
12. When the Officer says "Gee Your eyes look red, have you been drinking?" You probably shouldn't respond with,"Gee Officer your eyes look glazed, have you been eating doughnuts?"
RE: Never Say To the Police
The two names come from an old American TV show about a small town. Andy is the sheriff and Barney is the deputy sheriff who is always making humorous mistakes.
RE: Never Say To the Police
Is that a bit like Rosco (P Coltraine) and Cletus..or was in Enis? Can't recall. From the Dukes Of Hazzard. Ahhh showing my age now.. ;)

RE: Never Say To the Police
Good ones dave. I was stopped by the cops whilst driving back from a party. I asked, "Are you looking for a bomb officer?" He replied, "Yeah, and if I find one, I'll stuff it down your f*g throat!" I should have let it go ofc but I said, "Do you still need to take an intelligence test to get into the police force these days?" Not a good idea - "I'll remember you Nick!", and he did - another story...

RE: 1year anniversary and why I am still here :O
sorry, but i think you're either misunderstanding or misrespresenting her post, imo.i thought she was just saying some of the hosts who have been her a while have lost:"their innocence",which is to be expected with the mish mash of members that pass through here.we all become more cynical as we go through life.it's not necessarily a bad thing to have our eyes opened to reality.as long as we aren't totally cynical.
RE: 1year anniversary and why I am still here :O
Wow...*laugh of everyone and everything *... too strongly said, dont you think? For such outgiving you should reread at least some of my previous posts then...better all of them. Anyway, I was not expecting everyone to like everything what I am posting. Here we meet different opinions and different attitudes as well as different understanding of things.
As for the respect and good manners...to be honest, you are the first who tells me that...so, no comments. Hmm..I remember much more rude posts here...where have you been at that time, lovelydana?
Well, I still can see nothing in my original post that could hurt someone's feelings...and if someone happened or will happen to misread it, unfortunately I can do nothing here.
lol..why I have a felling that all that have been argued here hundreds of times...
Have a nice day.

Maybe the description 'some kind of cynics' is offensive to Dana, the new sounding superior to the old. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way Laughing girl but don't dismiss her feelings so readily - it's nice to be nice! ;-) Oh, and I hope you keep posting too. :-)

RE: 1year anniversary and why I am still here :O ~ LovelyDana
Ahhh ladies ladies.. please before things get out of hand I think we all ought to take laughing girls post in the spirit in which is was made. As a very long in the tooth member I can concur that long periods of time spent on CC either as a host or a member can take the shine of whatever rose tinted glasses you happened to view the world with before they come here.
Of course everyone has a different experience and some are more hmmm damaging than others. I have met some very 'cynical' hosts in my time as well as many equally cynical members. Personally I think they compliment each other perfectly and they both only ever get out of CC either money or sex. Which is fine, nothing wrong with CC doing what it does best for lots of people. But there is such a dimension that goes beyond just the money and the sex and can bridge the world in to something so much fuller and complete. Friendships, relationships , marriage , futures can all start here on CC and have done for many many years now.
Of course I only can speak from my experience but that is going back quite a few years now and means I have seen friends get married start families, have new careers, move to other countries.
Yes CC will effect everyone in a different way, and those that don't know what I am talking about are either already too experienced enough to care or not experienced enough to understand.
Now come on LovelyDana , be lovely; and not see offence when none was intended. Laughing girl is not your enemy and neither am I.

RE: Amy Winehouse
How did it take you so long to realize this.
But I love her music and voice.
I say no no no :) to her hubby too lol

RE: Amy Winehouse
Great singer but in a mess:( hope she will find her way! pity to see a reall talent disappear down the britney spears road.
RE: Amy Winehouse
Her attitude is what makes her as a person. Don't you understand that? If her attitude was "normal" her life would be normal, too. You can't have one without the other.
RE: Amy Winehouse
I don't think she should have gotten any awards. It would send a better message to younger people that if they screw up their lives, they don't get any recognition. She does have a great voice... so did Janis Joplin and look what happened to her. Some lessons are NEVER learned.
RE: Amy Winehouse
thats a very good point you have there. these are the people the kids look up to
RE: Amy Winehouse
Amy is a fantastic artist. Stylish, sexy, and gifted with a raw energy and soul that few singers can match. I hope her candle (as I fear) does not blow out too quickly
BTW, Edgar Allan Poe, Salvador Dali, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Heath Ledger, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Charles Bukowski, Judy Garland, I could go on for hours...pat, present and most assuredly future, the creative spirit takes many turns...and many artists are dark and not "normal". They have special gifts, sadly many have terrible burdens to bear. Let us not confuse their great talent...with their tragic flaws.

RE: Amy Winehouse
ABSOLUTELY!!! The highly creative ones are never "normal." That's why it is essential to admire their work and not their lifestyle.
I don't know HER music, but I can say that I love Janis Joplin's voice and work, but I sure as hell wouldn't want her as a next door neighbor.

RE: Amy Winehouse
Like you, I love the Beatles and their legacy but look at the amount of acid they dropped. I was angry with them at the time because of my kids. Amy is just one of the latest of a long line of succession of pop stars taking and thereby, inadvertently at least, promoting drugs.
Maybe she and Docherty should get together now Kate has finally kicked him out. Well done Kate, the guy is a loser, now kick the habit too.

RE: Amy Winehouse
I don't have children so I suppose I'm clueless on this issue, ( artist, as role model) but is not the responsibility of parents to be role models for their children. To explain that great artists, musicians, athletes, politicians, actors etc. can be admired without being emulated? Without knowing artists personally can we make intelligent, thoughtful conclusions about their...personal life and habits? For myself, I prefer to judge artists on their artistic output, and try to stay away from too much judgment.
Judge not lest you be judged and all. I read today where singer Natalie Cole thinks Amy should not have been given awards because of personal behavior. Coming from a former addict of multiple substances...that seems like a tiny bit of hypocrisy.

RE: Amy Winehouse
Yes, I hear you, heard it all before. Nevertheless, as a dad of young kids, I kinda hoped that their idols would give them more life-affirming examples. My youngest daughter loved Gary Glitter ffs!
Sorry, in the end, I reject the idea that artists can be forgiven because they are different. It's bs. I was an actor and singer, now script writer - I never did and don't need now to use drugs or generally live stupidly to be creative. Fuck, I really despise the myth that artistic people should be treated differently! I lost so many friends who died much too young partly because they believed it was glamourous to destroy themselves.

RE: Amy Winehouse
Valid points, I have several friends die untimely deaths from abuse related causes...I know that pain too. I also agree that artists should not be lauded for substance abuse. I'm simply saying that some...repeat some artists as well as non-artists, try to deal with life the best way they can. Having said that, i ask again who are we to judge their behavior? Additionally, should we prevent these artists from being recognized for great talent because they have flaws?
I can love Jimi Hendrix, or Amy Winehouse, or Miles Davis, or Stephen King without condoning their personal choices. I am not defending substance abuse, but I do defend the rights of adults to make their own choices. And if we start judging artists and others by their flaws whether it be drugs, or sexual habits, or other personal traits...the world would be a much quieter duller place. No Beatles, no Freud, no Sting, no Tupac, personally, though tragic in many ways...I'll take the tragedy and the artists together, such is life.

RE: Amy Winehouse
yours are too are valid points but it is so painful when a great talent dies prematurely and the drug dealers laugh all the way to the bank
RE: Amy Winehouse
Obviously, you don't remember being a youth and being influenced by your peers and what looked cool and what your cultural icons did and said.
I certainly wasn't close to being a total follower but I was about 2 centimeters away from becoming a heroin addict in 1971. I was hanging out with (and lusting after) a girl who wanted to go get some smack and the only thing that kept me away from it was the legend that "the first hit is free."

RE: help with advice
For starters, you should use your computer to do some research on the country.
RE: help with advice
Godd luck AvrOra, you will have a wonderful time. It's a smile culture, never get angry just smile and repeat what you want, and not what someone may want you to want.
Be great if you could do something which I can't now, photograph a tiger in the wild while you are riding on an elephant. Be careful of the food! It's often very spicy and the fish can come from a polluted river. I had terrible stomach problems for 3 months after I got back home.
The ladyboys won't bother you except maybe to discuss fashion as you are a woman. It's a safe country especially as you won't be going to the red light districts, will you? ;-) Have fun and would love to see your pics.

RE: help with advice
Ah yes, the food. You can definitely count on getting sick from the food at some point. It happens to most people. My father lived the first 30 years of his life in Thailand. And whenever he goes back to visit family, even he has stomach problems at some time during his trip.
The discomfort may leave you with no appetite at all. It can last for two or three days sometimes. So brace yourself for that possibility. You may want to talk to a local pharmacist about what over-the-counter medicines are available for stomach problems.

RE: help with advice
But it was great when all the neighbours came to meet me at gf's house, and each brought a home-made traditional Thai dish.
Lovely people and much more relaxed and humourous about sex than we Westerners. I am NOT talking about sex workers so no snide comments about the farang sex trade from anyone please; that is not the real Thailand just the rich exploiting the poor, as per usual.

RE: help with advice
if she's going for a fashion shoot the probability could be high that she will be eating at major hotels and restros thereby lessening the chance of getting food from a polluted river the spice is another problem
Looking for my Valentine!
Hello sweetie! My heart is complete! And yours? Would u like to be my Valentine? I will be waiting for you!!
Usual Suspects
Just don't discuss this film, ok? Any further attempts to post about it will be pulled and the culprits eliminated. You have been warned!
RE: Usual Suspects
Awwww.. shame. ;)
But it was good though. Seen it 3 times now. Was really cool seeing it in the cinema for the first time. Real edge of your seat stuff.
And one of Kevin Spacey's finest performances I think.
But don't discuss that ;)
