I just don't think you should judge yourself too harshly for caring. For myself I would always wish to be accused of caring too much than to be accused of not caring at all. Prof, With all due respects, there's nothing in "host's..." post that makes plain just what the "deal" was. Was the guy coming for a brief visit to meet her and expecting the accomodations one might expect at a B & B? Was he staying, or settling in, for an extended sojourn? If so, for how long? She also didn't say what her host country is and as such I'm not sure we can draw any conclusion about the standard convention with such rentals. For example, do Muscovites rent their dachas when they are not occupied?

As you said, you assume she didn't ask the guy if he expected the flat to be furnished, but it would appear he did. But why it would be incumbent upon the host---and not the proprietor of the property---to equip the place, she does not make clear. If she did not broach the subject with the guest upon his arrival, it's hardly fair to assume he was being a tight-fisted ingrate, don't you agree?

Obviously Mr. Switch got scammed. Why else would he make such an insensitive comment? Or maybe he's just one of the amazingly rude viewers all my host friends complain about. I find this story really touching, even if the protagonist was a bit naiive. I've helped out one or two hosts that were in a bind, but never felt I was being scammed. Host in Adult, maybe we're both naiive, but we've managed to survive this far!

If you possess enough reciepts, and other documentation to prove your story, as in the emails asking you to set up the place and such, plus witnesses too. Then start pestering Judge Greg Mathis, and do so until you get a results similar to that you will need to bring your case before him, lay off wise cracks until it's over and you may very well get you compensation. Never can tell, it may work out for you, if you already have the paper work and all, the only thing you can do is try, may get taken well care of in the end!

it's a catch 22! You might be thinking you doing somebody a favour and helping them out, but the guy might be thinking your putting the price up and trying to scam HIM! To most people it's strange that a person without asking will buy everything for him, and maybe most of the stuff you bought he didnt want, maybe he wanted his own stuff to buy... If this happened to me and me as a guy, i'd probably give you the money back, but i will be angry at you in a way... well maybe not, depends on the circumstances BUT I woudlnt feel right and fully happy... Infact i would be thinking: Why couldnt you just ask first???

At the end of the day you meeting someone from the internet and before you met in real life, you can't possibly have a full 100% trust in each other! So the person doesnt exactly know what he got himself into.. UP Guy, Thanks for the post. You’ve given me more food for thought and prompted me to look UP the word in my Shorter OED. As I suspected, the word is a part of English’s earlier Germanic roots. It appears as both “up” and “upp” in Old English. It is spelled “up” in Old Scandinavian and “upp” in Old Norsk. It is related to the Old High German “ūf” from which comes the Modern German “auf”, as in “Wachet auf!” (=Wake UP!) This Shorter OED lists 2 ½ pages of entries for “up” and 6 pages of compound words with the prefix “up.”

I first had occasion to think about how many ways we use the word “up” in English, as a result of living in France! My French girlfriend, a polyglot and lover of languages, pointed it out to me. One evening, as she was leaving my second floor apartment, I said to her, “Let me walk you down,” whereupon she said, “English speakers use ‘up’ and ‘down’ a lot.” When I thought about it, I realized she was right. It also made me think of how Germanic languages make use of compounds to form new words much more frequently than Romance languages.

“Down” is also frequently used. There are 1 ½ pages of listings for it, plus nearly 2 pages of compounds. “Down” is from the Middle English of the same spelling.
