I understand your displeasure, indeed your moral outrage, with those who put down people's English skills or another's appearance. Such behavior says more about them than those they criticize. Their ignorance is self-indicting and in my opinion nothing more needs to be said, though I would defend the right of anyone who has been a target of such an assault to defend herself. I do not say if someone pisses in your face, you should thank him. But I do say if we object to such behavior, our response should be measured and we should, as best possible, try to remain above the fray. Consider the source and do not give into the understandable impulse to stoop to their level. How often in such matters I think of my grandmother’s wisdom. She said, “You might have to stand in mud, but you don’t have to put your head in it.”

How ironic that this thread bears the title, “Respect!” Reading through it, I don’t see much evidence of it. Many people make valid points, but it’s hard to have a civil discussion in the midst of a mudslinging contest. The general tone here makes it seem more like a virtual Jerry Springer Show than a serious exchange about the need to be respectful of others. If there is a better way to communicate how to behave than by example, I don’t know of it.

I must, therefore, chide you a bit, “a friend :)” for bemoaning the disrespect shown your friend and for giving into the impulse to respond in kind by calling the offenders “trash”, etc. I hasten to add that I agree with the substance of your criticism, just not the form. As regards the substance of your criticism, I agree gratuitous insults about another’s appearance are insupportable. Period. The language thing is more interesting. I admire anyone who learns a language other than his native tongue. Unfortunately, Americans (and most native Anglophones) are woefully bad about learning foreign languages and they often are the first ones to criticize a non-native speaker’s less-than-perfect English. If they were to make a serious attempt to learn another language or if they lived in a country where English was not the native tongue, they might be a little more humble. Not only that they would learn more about their own tongue and about the nature of language in general. There’s a German expression which translates, “He who does not know a second language knows nothing of his own.” How true! And how much richer a life is when one has more than one lens from which to see the world. As the French say, “Apprendre une langue est vivre de nouveau,” (To learn a language is to live anew) !
